Spencer
Per request to update on Spencer:
Spencer did leave the house today, but he is still experiencing throat pain. It is only through the miracle of powerful pain medicine that he is out of bed. When that medicine wears off, it is most unpleasant for everyone concerned.
I wasn't prepared for the horrible stink, which presumably comes from the anesthesia. I was up with him for much of the night last night and it was all I could do to hold him! Let me just say, I proved my love. Ghastly!
It remains to be seen whether he will make it to school tomorrow. I'll have to time the drugs just right so he feels good soon enough to get dressed and go and it lasts all the way until class is over.

Have you called the doctor's office?
Just a comment here about this. Gas anesthesia does not have a stench. It has more of a chemical type of smell. If gas anesthesia was used it also is expelled through the lungs in a matter of hours.
I would make sure that he hasn't developed an infection at his surgery site. Infections have a "powerful" stench.
Also, I would have expected the sore throat to have subsided by quite a bit by now. At least to a more tolerable level.
Let us know how he is doing.

We have missed your blog, glad your back. Glad spencer is doing ok.

Thanks for the info. I did, in fact, take him to the doctor this morning. They kind of made me feel a bit silly with comments like, "He's had surgery, it's gonna hurt." Of course, they told me to have him drink more water, which I knew. In fact, I took him in because he can't seem to get anything down and he stinks, so I was concerned he might be dehydrated and/or infected. They said the scabs smell that bad and they will smell for another week!!!!
I think the initial odor may have been anesthesia because I could smell it coming out his pores, but this new smell is even worse. Blech.
Since you have experience and you had the same thoughts, I'm glad to hear from you. Perhaps I'm not just another silly, worrywart mom after all!
You're not just another worry wart mom.
Continue with your instincts. You know your child better than anyone.
Too many professionals will ignore early warning signs and try to make you feel 'silly'. Don't take any of that kind of 'c..p' from them. You are your child's best advocate.
I still say he shouldn't "stink" and that he shouldn't be in that much pain.
God gave us both of these senses for good reason. Pain tells us that something is awry and smell can give us warnings as well as pleasure.
Infection has a smell. Scabs don't.
How's he doing today?

Here's what could be going on:
Eating will be difficult to start with, and soft or liquid foods will be less uncomfortable. Although it may be painful, swallowing solid food like toast and cereal will help healing by scraping away dead tissue. Taking a dose of painkillers half an hour before meals may help to ease any discomfort.
The smell could be coming from dead tissue.

BTW... I apologize for belaboring this point but it is just one of my pet peeves.
One more item of interest:
Our results indicate that ampicillin sodium/amoxicillin trihydrate therapy is well tolerated and safe in the nonallergic child and is effective in minimizing fever and other troublesome postoperative symptoms, such as pain, lassitude, mouth odor, and poor oral intake after tonsillectomy.
Did they send you home with any antibiotics?
Okay...
I'm through.

T.J., you're my hero. Thanks for all the info!
Spencer is still experiencing mouth pain, but the odor is gone. The doc did take my odor concern seriously, I think, but he didn't have a fever so he wasn't concerned about infection. Also, he looked at the surgical site and said it looked like it was healing well.
I wonder if the cauterization (coblation) and//or the constant moisture on the scab contributes to the odor?
Spence has had one 3-hour outing yesterday and one today and he has tolerated it fairly well. I think he is on the mend. Thank you so much for your careful attention to this!
